Bali temples at sunset: Tanah Lot or Uluwatu?
Among Bali temples at sunset, Tanah Lot and Uluwatu sit at opposite ends of the south-west coast: one on a rock in the surf, one on a cliff high above it. Here is how they differ, and which evening suits you.

A rock in the sea and a temple on a cliff
Tanah Lot and Uluwatu both sit on the south-west coast and both face the evening sky over the sea. They are not alike. Tanah Lot stands on a rock just off the shore in Tabanan, so close to the waves that at high tide the sea surrounds it.78 Uluwatu stands on the south-western tip of the Bukit Peninsula in Pecatu, a cliffside temple 70 m above the Indian Ocean.92
That difference shapes everything else. At Tanah Lot you look across at the temple, a dark shape against the sky with the surf around it, and at low tide you can walk across the reef to its foot.1 At Uluwatu you stand on the cliff yourself and look out over the open sea, with the temple beside you and the drop below.
Both are active temples. Tanah Lot is dedicated to Bhatara Segara, the god of the sea, and parts of both sites are reserved for worship.1011 Whichever you choose, you are a guest at a place of prayer first and a viewpoint second, and the rules on dress and access apply. Cover your shoulders and knees at both, keep your voice down near the shrines, and step aside when people arrive with offerings.
The view: looking at a temple or out from one
Tanah Lot gives you the postcard. From the Enjung Galuh point, which the official site counts among the best places to watch the sunset, you see the temple from many angles, and the arch of Batu Bolong a short way north draws photographers at sunset too.121314 If you want a picture of a temple against the evening sky, this is the place.
Uluwatu gives you the panorama. The temple stands on its 70 m cliff, and the view is out over the ocean rather than at a single subject.2 You see the sun go down into the open sea from high above it, with the temple walls and the cliff edge as the foreground.
Neither is better in absolute terms. If you only have one evening, decide whether you want to look at a temple or to look out from one. Photographs of Tanah Lot reward a lens with some reach and a little patience as the colour builds; at Uluwatu a wide view of the sea and the cliff line tells the story better than any close-up.

The Kecak at each temple
Both temples stage a Kecak, the chanting dance created in the 1930s by the Balinese artist Wayan Limbak with the German painter Walter Spies.18 At Tanah Lot the official site places it at De Jukung Resto & Bar and says it begins at sunset; a ticket starts from $6 on GetYourGuide.5
At Uluwatu the managing body lists a daily show from 18:00 to 19:00 with the gate opening at 16:00, and advises arriving at least an hour early.619 Its ticket costs IDR 150,000 for adults and IDR 75,000 for children aged 2 to 9, and the temple entrance is paid separately.15
At Uluwatu the cliff and the sea stand behind the dancers; at Tanah Lot the show begins as the light goes over the shore. If the dance is your priority, the fixed daily schedule at Uluwatu makes it easier to plan around; if the temple at sunset is your priority, Tanah Lot is the one.

Tanah Lot or Uluwatu: which temple is better at sunset?
The video starts loading once you tap play.
Fees, hours and dress
The official list at Tanah Lot charges foreign adults IDR 75,000 and children IDR 40,000.3 Uluwatu charges international visitors IDR 60,000 for adults and IDR 40,000 for children.4 Parking and, at both places, the Kecak come on top.35
Uluwatu publishes its hours: open every day from 07:00 AM to 07:00 PM.36 Tanah Lot's management does not print hours on its price page, and the Ministry of Tourism says the visiting hours can change, so check before you go.37 Plan your arrival with that in mind: whichever you choose, you need to be through the gate well before the sun touches the horizon.
Dress codes differ in practice. At Uluwatu every visitor must wear a sarong and sash, and the temple provides them free at the entrance.16 For Tanah Lot, bring your own: the full day booked on this site strictly enforces covered shoulders, underarms, back and knees at some of its stops and asks you to pack a sarong or scarf.
Monkeys, crowds and the tide
Uluwatu has a feature of its own: long-tailed macaques that are notorious for snatching sunglasses, cameras and flip-flops.17 The south-coast tour warns that the monkeys can take glasses, hats, snacks and shiny objects, so secure everything before you walk in.
Tanah Lot's wild card is the sea. The rock can be reached on foot only at low tide, and visitors are asked to watch the tide, the waves and the safety instructions of the management.138 A low tide at sunset gives you the reef and the silhouette together; a high tide gives you the temple alone in the surf.
Sunset is the busy hour. A guided Uluwatu tour says to expect crowds around 5 PM and limited photo spots. At Tanah Lot the Ministry of Tourism suggests coming very early in the morning if you want fewer people.39 For either, arriving well before the light turns is the only real defence.
Which one to pick for your trip
Think about where you are staying. Tanah Lot sits north-west of the beach towns of Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta, and the half-day sunset trip collects guests from those areas free of charge. Uluwatu lies at the far southern end of the island on the Bukit Peninsula, so it suits a stay in Jimbaran, Nusa Dua or the Bukit itself better.9
Then think about what the evening is for. If you want a single image to remember Bali by, the temple on its rock with the sun behind it is hard to beat. If you want a show, a sea view from a height and a stop at Jimbaran Bay afterwards, an Uluwatu evening with the Kecak packs all of that into 6 hours.
And think about the season. Both coasts face the same sky, and in the wet months from November to March a clear horizon is never guaranteed at either.40 With a free day in reserve, book the temple you want most early in your stay and keep a second evening for a retry or for the other one.
Tanah Lot to Uluwatu temple in one day
Can you see both? Yes, but not both sunsets. The trip from Tanah Lot to Uluwatu temple runs the length of the south-west coast, past Canggu, Kuta and the airport, and Uluwatu alone is about an hour by road from Ngurah Rai Airport.41 The south-coast day tour does exactly this pairing in 9 to 10 hours, with Jimbaran Bay as a third stop.
That tour starts from $29, is rated 4.57 from 876 reviews and has guides in English, Japanese and Indonesian. Entry tickets and extras are add-ons you choose before checkout, and the Kecak is included only if you select it. It warns that sunset visibility depends on the weather and that traffic in the south can stretch travel times.
If you would rather give each temple its own evening, book them separately: the half-day Tanah Lot sunset trip from $20, and a 6-hour Uluwatu sunset tour with the Kecak and Jimbaran Bay from $40. Separate evenings cost more time, but you get each temple at its best hour.
