Where the sea temple sits on Bali

Tanah Lot lies on the south-west coast of Bali, in the village of Beraban in the Kediri district of Tabanan regency.1 It is not in Badung, the regency of Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu, although it is close to them: Wikipedia places it about 13 km south of the town of Tabanan and 20 km north-west of Denpasar.5

The Ministry of Tourism gives the distance as around 30 km from Denpasar and around 30 km from Ngurah Rai Airport.23 The figures come from different sources and measure from different points, so plan your timing with the longer one.

On a map, follow the coast north-west from Canggu and you reach it after a short stretch of rice fields and villages. The map on this page shows the temple, the shore temples around it and the towns you are likely to set off from, with buttons that open each place in Google Maps. If you want a quick orientation, look for Canggu first: the sea temple lies a little further up the same stretch of coast, with the coast road leading inland towards Kediri and the main highway.

Driving yourself or with a driver

The Ministry of Tourism describes the classic route: from Denpasar take the main highway west to the town of Kediri, where a large sign at the main intersection points you south-west to Pura Tanah Lot.4 From there the road runs through Beraban towards the coast and the car park.

The parking area is big, at 2.77 hectares, and the official vehicle charges are IDR 3,000 for a scooter and IDR 5,000 for a car.86 From the car park you walk down to the sea through a long lane of souvenir shops; Wikipedia notes that every visitor passes through it.7

Hiring a car with a driver for the day spares you the parking and the evening traffic. If you ride a scooter, wear a helmet, avoid the main highway at rush hour where you can, and leave the temple before dark if you are not sure of the way back. Keep small notes ready for the parking attendant, and photograph the spot where you leave the scooter; rows of identical bikes are easy to lose in the dark.

From Kuta and the other beach towns

For the drive from Kuta to Tanah Lot temple and from the other beach resorts of the south, the tours tell you roughly how long it takes. The half-day sunset trip picks up free of charge in Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur, Kerobokan and Canggu and lists about an hour by jeep or SUV each way. The Kecak ticket's optional transfer from Kuta also counts about an hour in each direction.

The full day booked on this site lists hotel transfer for Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Jimbaran, Sanur, Kerobokan, Canggu, Nusa Dua and Ubud, and about 1 hour by car at the start. The driver contacts you the evening before to confirm the exact pick-up time, which depends on where everyone is staying.

Canggu is the closest of the busy areas, and Nusa Dua and Jimbaran the furthest. Whatever the listings say, traffic in the south of the island can stretch any drive; the south-coast day that pairs Uluwatu with Tanah Lot warns that travel times may be longer than usual.

Tanah Lot, the sea temple of Bali: a travel guide

The video starts loading once you tap play.

From Seminyak by tour or taxi

Seminyak sits inside the free pick-up zone of both the sunset trip and the full day booked here, so a tour is the simplest way to cover the distance from Seminyak to Tanah Lot temple. Both start from your hotel lobby and bring you back to it.

If you prefer to go on your own, arrange the return before you set off. Finding a ride back can take a while at sunset, when everyone leaves at once. Agreeing a fixed return with a driver who waits for you in the car park is calmer.

Plan your evening so that you arrive with time to walk down to the shore. The lane of shops between the car park and the sea takes a while to get through, and the best viewpoints fill before the light turns.716 A late arrival still gets you a view, but not the choice of spots.

From Ubud and the highland roads

From Ubud the trip is longer, and the tours reflect it. The south-coast day that ends in Jimbaran picks up Ubud guests earlier because the drive is longer, while the highland loop meets its group guests at Ubud Palace. The full day booked here simply includes Ubud in its pick-up list.

A day trip from Ubud to Tanah Lot can also fill the drive with other sights. One listing that combines Ubud sights with the sea temple drives about 1.5 hours from the Tegallalang rice terraces to Tanah Lot, at the end of a day with the Monkey Forest and Tirta Empul.

Coming from the mountains is another option. A highland day lists about 1 hour by car from the Handara gate near Lake Bratan down to Tanah Lot, and the private highland tour lists 1 hour from Jatiluwih. That is the logic behind the full-day tours that link the terraces, the lake temple and the coast.

From the airport on arrival or departure day

Tanah Lot is around 30 km from Ngurah Rai Airport, the Ministry of Tourism says, which makes it tempting to squeeze in on the day you land or the day you fly.3 It can work, but treat the plan with care. Flights land at all hours, the drive across the south of the island depends heavily on the traffic, and you will have luggage to think about.

The full-day tour booked here lists luggage and large bags among the things that are not allowed, so it does not suit a day with suitcases in the car. If you want to stop on the way to or from the airport, a private transfer with a driver who waits while you visit is the more realistic choice; agree the waiting time and the price in advance.

The better plan for most trips is to visit on a full day of its own. Spend the night somewhere in the south, check the tide table, and pick the hour that suits what you want to see: the reef at low water, the calm early morning that the ministry recommends, or the silhouette at sunset.927

Arriving: from the car park to the shore

Once you are there, the walking is short but busy. Buy your ticket at the counter near the car park, where the official price for a foreign adult is IDR 75,000.21 The Majapahit Museum near the entrance serves as an introduction before you reach the sacred area.28

Then follow the lane of shops down to the sea. The art market sells sarongs, hats and sandals, handy if you forgot to dress for the temple.29 Toilets and hand-washing stations are spread around the grounds.30

At the shore, check the water before you plan the next hour. The temple rock can be reached on foot only at low tide, and the cliff paths lead north to Batu Bolong and Enjung Galuh whatever the sea is doing.93116
